FOUNDATION FOR SAFER GOVERNMENT CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY
Monday, 28 November, 2005 *
Head contractors who tender for major Australian Government building and construction contracts will have to be accredited under a new OHS scheme from 1 March. The Federal Safety Commissioner will oversee the scheme and is writing to major construction companies, industry associations and Australian Government clients advising of the requirements of the scheme and the application processes. The scheme is also being advertised nationally.
The scheme will be implemented in two stages. Stage 1 will apply from 1 March to directly funded Australian Government building and construction projects with a value of $6 million or more. Applications from contractors will need to be received by 31 January in order for assessment to be completed by 1 March. Full accreditation under stage 1 will then become mandatory from 1 October.
Stage 2 will extend the scheme, subject to financial thresholds, to all directly and indirectly funded Australian Government construction work and is scheduled for implementation in 2007.
More information about the scheme and accreditation can be found at www.fsc.gov.au

NSW POLICE URGE CAUTION AFTER 10 ROAD FATALITIES
Sunday, 4 December, 2005 *
Police are urging drivers to slow down after 10 deaths on New South Wales roads this weekend. In the latest fatality, a 30-year-old man died in a collision at Budgewoi on the state's central coast last night.
Two men and a woman died in an accident yesterday on the New England Highway at Whittingham, south of Singleton. Also yesterday, a 36-year-old man died in a hit and run in Sydney's south-west and a pedestrian was killed on the south coast. Four other men also died in separate accidents around the state yesterday.
Police Chief Superintendent John Hartley says the accidents are being investigated, but he is not blaming the weather. "Look it hasn't been the case that all accidents involved bad weather or bad road conditions, so I think it's probably people not driving to the road conditions," he said.
"Two motorcyclists and one pedestrian have been killed, but all these are matters for the coroner who will investigate fully the circumstances and hand down the finding.
"But again I'm saying this is probably the worst weekend I've seen in the last three years and I'm certainly very concerned about it."
